It seems like everybody is willing to call themselves an seo expert these days. It’s just ridiculous if you ask me. I feel bad for small business owners who have no idea what seo even is and end up with someone they think is an expert. Only, of course to never have their websites achieve a ranking for a competitive term.

So this post is kind of a heads up, a warning to those who are looking to hire an seo company or seo expert to do your dirty work. I want to make sure that you don’t get scammed by these vermin who call themselves pro’s and experts when in fact they are just ignorant noobs looking to make some money.

Here’s the real truth, and bookmark this page because you wont get the straight truth anywhere else.

The truth is that the so called seo’s that offer search engine submission services are the chumps you need to stay away from. These are the same guys that talk about having good content for your website because they don’t really know what seo is all about. They repeat the propaganda that google puts out there. That’s it!

Look, search engines aren’t perfect. In fact they are a long way from being perfect and will probably never ever be perfect. Now, we know what the aim of a search engine is right? It is to deliver relevant results to the searcher. The search engines don’t want you to mess with their system of weighing the importance of a page or their ranking formula. They want marketers to go home for the day.

Good seo’s know what the quirks in the search engines are and exploit them to the fullest. They also know the search engines strong points and play to them just like the search engines would want. An seo expert knows the regular stuff and the tricky stuff. It’s the seo’s that don’t know much that fall back on the old “Content is King” bologna. Content is only part of the deal.

Since when is search engine optimization all about writing good content? That’s ridiculous! Like the search engine can tell good content from lousy content. How many times have you found exactly what you were looking for on page 18? I know I have many times. Can a search engine tell good poetry from bad poetry? No. That’s because search engines have no way to qualify content.

So all in all stay away from those seo’s who offer basically search engine submission, keyword lists, meta tags… Oh, let me stop their.

I can’t tell you how many times my clients have asked me how much it will cost to ‘do the meta tags’ LMAO!!! Poor suckers paid other seo’s top dollar just to put some keywords in the meta tags. Terrible.

Real seo takes work and skills. It’s not about producing a keyword list generated by software and telling the client he must create enough content to fit all these keywords in. “Make sure to write GREAT CONTENT!” ya right.

There are so many factors and things to analyze when starting an seo campaign. Anyway, my rant is over now. Contact a real seo expert massachusetts style.

Link building tools are essential if you are a professional internet marketer. Successful internet marketing comes in different forms and with different business models but it all can be boiled down to a really simple forumula.

You need sites (or pages) and you need them to rank. That’s what it boils down to. You need to rank for keywords that lead to sales. Naturally it goes without saying that the better keywords you have the better traffic your website will receive. But you wont receive any traffic if you don’t rank for some keywords. You need to appear in the results when someone googles a keyword.

So how to you rank for keywords? Well that all depends on the competitiveness of the keyword. If you simply write a lot of content you will automatically rank for lots of longtail keywords. A longtail keyword is a keyword that is 3 or more words long. So writing lots of content will have the byproduct of putting lots of keywords, whether you know it or not, on your pages.

The problem is that these kind of keywords have low search volume. You need to rank for keywords with a high search volume. But everybody knows this already and they are all out there competing for those golden keywords. You are not going to just write enough content to rank for say, Credit Cards.

That’s why you need to build links! When you build links and use your keywords as the anchor text then that alone will help you in a major way to rank your website for those competitive keywords. The problem is that everyone else is building links to their sites too. People do directory submissions and article submissions and things like that.

How can we beat those guys? With software of course. We use software to automate link building tasks. Kind of like when farm machines replaced manual labor.

Link building tools are so necessary that you just can’t seriously compete without them. You just can’t compete. Some so called experts will say that content is King and building links is a short term approach. I wonder why they say that? Some people just repeat the search engine propaganda. You know, build a good site and put something valuable on it and people will link to you naturally.

So these folks who say this do agree that links count in your ranking but they just don’t advocate link building or link building tools. The fact is that building links to your site is the fastest way to get it to rank for whatever keywords you are working on. It’s that simple. Once you realize that then you will understand why link building tools are so important for us internet marketers. Link building tools automate the tedious and mundane tasks that we must perform over and over again when we go on a link building campaign.

You can buy link building software that automate (or semi automate) bookmarking, article submission, directory submissions and blog commenting for starters. Link building tools will put you on par with at least intermediate internet marketers and seo’s.

There are so many link building strategies that it’s almost impossible to number them. I’ve seen posts titled 120 ways to get links but I was never really impressed with them. It was a lot of fluff most of the time, but still with a few jems here and there.

I’ve already delved into some interesting link building strategies in some of my previous posts about funneling page rank. In this post I want to talk about one particular link building strategy. Now I want to make clear first that strategy differs from tactics. Tactics are the how and strategy is the what.

One strategy for getting links is to put something linkable on your site. Then people will link to it and so your link building for you. This could be a crazy picture of something or something very useful like free software or a big list of one thing or another. Something cool, maybe a funny or shocking video of some sort. This is called “link bait” and it works quite well sometimes and not so well other times. It can be hit or miss.

The downside is that this may not help you rank for your keywords. If people are linking to your page they will chose whatever keyword they want as the anchor text. Again, it’s hit or miss.

Not everyone can put something so extremely useful and cool on their site. So what should those people do and what kind of link building strategies are available to them? Needless to say it will be a strategy that is much more proactive. You will have to go out and get these links yourself. The upside to this is you have control. You can decide what you want as anchor text for the link.

Everyone will tell you about the four basic places to find links. They are

Article Marketing

Bookmarking Sites

Directories

Blog Comments

But what do you do when all of your competitors are doing the same thing? Reciprocal links and link exchanges are nowhere NEAR as good as they used to be. What do you do? What if the page you are getting links to is not your homepage? You problably want to know what difference that makes.

For one thing you can’t get blog comments to pages other than your homepage. Your comment will go into the askimet bin and not ever be seen. No link for you! You are supposed to leave your homepage as a link in a blog comment and if you don’t askimet knows. Askimet is very good at fighting spam by the way. That’s old news though.

The problem remains however that you can’t use blog commenting as an effective link building strategy for pages that are not homepages. Same goes with directory links. Most directories only accept and approve links to your homepage. So there are two of the four basic link building strategies that wont work if you are trying to build deep links.

That’s when you’ll find out about:

profile links

referrer links

guestbook links

message board links

blog farm links

pligg sites

shout boxes

scraper links

trackback links

google links!

1. Profile Links

Profile links are links you get from creating profiles at different web2.0 properties. I talked about this in my post about funneling juice. Most of the time you can add a link to any page in your ‘about me’ space on your profile. Most of the time you can only put your url in there and not an anchor. This is one reason to have your keyword in your url. Even if it’s just in the tag part of the url. It helps.

There are just thousands of these profile pages waiting for you. Check any of the pharma listings ie viagra and whatnot and you’ll see tons of profile pages. These folks actually rank these profile pages but that’s not what we are interested in doing right now. You just want to build a list of places that you could build a profile on. A big list.

These links could be beefed up if you commented (while logged in at each web2.o site) on stories that have a high pr. I usually don’t do that though as it is too much work to do that for every site I own. I usually just get some bookmark links to these profile pages with bookmarking demon and call it a day. It gives them some weight and it’s automatic.

2. Referrer Links

Referrer links come from log pages on other people sites. When you visit a site your visit is recorded in the stats. Those stats are made public in many cases. There are programs that will fake a visit to a site. The victim in this case would then log your site as the place the visitor came from and viola! You have a link. To make this work you need a big list of target sites that your script will spoof a visit. This is sometimes called referrer spam and is considered the least intrusive form of spam. It involves no hacking or anything illegal. Nothing I write about is illegal.

These links are just plain url links so again, it’s good to have your keywords in the url. They will usually end up in the url if you use keywords in your title. Anyways, seo’s will usually scrape a list of sites on the order of 50,000 or 100,000 sites or so and refer bomb them. You get a layer of links back at the end of the day. You also get visits from webmasters who check their stats. Maybe if you put something that a webmaster might want to purchase on your page…

3. Guestbook Links

Guestbooks used to be all the rage back in the early days of the internet. Every site had a big message at the top of the page that said, “Please sign my guestbook” and you could go and sign your name and leave a link to your site. People started noticing that there was one particularly popular software that people used in order to have a guestbook on their site. Consequently the page where you would actually sign the guestbook had tell tale phrases. You could do a search for “please sign my guestbook” and find thousands of results. You could leave your link at every one of them.

That was then this is now. Guestbooks quickly fell out of fashion because they were spammed to death. Not to mention they are pretty weak links. However, there are still people using guestbooks and they are still a valid way of increasing your rankings. Don’t believe me? Go into a very competitive niche like the pharma or credit card niche, analyze a dozen link profiles from top ranking sites and you WILL SEE that guestbook links are a major part of the link profile.

No doubt these are junk links but they add up! Get 100 of these links and your ranking will improve. Don’t take my word for it, go and analyze some of those quick ranking, super competitve pharma results like buy phentermine, buy viagra, buy hoodia diet pills…

4. Message Board Links

Message boards are like guestbooks sort of. It’s just a place where you can leave an open message for anyone to see. Yes these places exist and they are spammed out. You find spam about porn and gambling and all this other crap but it’s still a place to get a deep link. There are a variety of footprints that you can use to find message boards. A footprint is something that is always on a certain kind of site. For instance a footprint used to find wordpress blogs is “Powered by Wordpress”

Finding as many footprints as you can is the secret to amassing a ton of targets. That is to say potential places for you to get links.

5. Blog Farm Links

When you run out of internet you need to create more! Real seo’s go through the trouble of creating sites in order to give themselves links. You might go and create 100 blogs just to link to one particular page in order to really get it to rank. There are a surprising number of places that will let you host a blog for free. You can use the same content for all the blogs if you want. Some people worry about duplicate content. I don’t worry about that really, I just get some bookmarks to the blogs and call it a day. These are actually pretty good links!

Most seo’s have software that will post articles to their blog network. You just load up a list of your blogs and it will post content to them all automatically. Blogs are quickly indexed because google loves blogs. I like blogfarms quite a bit actually. They give you a better link than guestbooks or message boards or articles for that matter.

6. Pligg Sites

Pligg sites are another type of web2.0 property. These are user generated content sites. You even get profile pages from pligg sites and can funnel link juice to your profile page from the homepage, as I’ve mentioned before.

But I usually just bookmark my own ’stories’ at these sites. They usually have lousy pagerank and only a few pligg sites are well known. So these are basically like bookmarking sites except they are modeled after digg.com. There are footprints all over pligg sites making them easy to find. Most are dofollow but some are nofollow.

One thing about pligg sites though is that some of them require that a story gets at least two votes before it is allowed out to the main part of the site. So many of your stories will go unnoticed by the search engines unless they get two votes. Some folks have been known to write scripts which will vote on stories in order to get them out on the front page. Cool stuff.

7. Shout Boxes

Shout boxes are kind of like message boards and guestbooks. They are usually on a rolling list on a widget somewhere on the sites. You can leave your url in the shout. Oggix is one of the most popular shout boxes. Go to oggix.com and you’ll see that they provide tag boards, message boards and shout boxes that you can put on your site.

Tons of people have these oggix shout boxes on their sites. Go and use them! The links are crappy but not worse than guestbook links. They work but you need a lot of them. Hey, you end up with another layer of links. Remember, those deep links are hard to get the normal way.

8. Scraper Links

Scrapers are black hat sites. Black hatters build sites that run automatically. They get their content by scraping popular news aggregates for hot stories. Sometimes they just scrape anything and everything but sometimes they scrape for just certain keywords. For instance, google trends is always being scraped by scraper sites. They just run through the news articles and blog posts listed in google trends and copy the whole thing. It is then reprinted on the scraper blog. So a scraper site is all duplicate content all the time.

There are a number of places that scrapers get their content from and weblogs is one of them. The scrapers then ping their sites and the aggregators scrape them! Then the cirlce repeats itself. Now if you use keywords that you know will be scraped then you can count on being scraped. But will the scraper site link back to you? Most of them strip out any links in your post. So trying to link to yourself via your own post wont work. However if you use the feed footer plugin you can put linkable tags on the end of your posts in your feed. These links actually stay intact and end up being the links that link back to you from the scraper sites.

This was written abuot ‘famously’ on bluehatseo.com by Eli, the author of the blog and a very clever seo!

This strategy is difficult for the inexperienced seo though. You have to be familiar with what kind of content gets scraped usually and what kind of niches and keywords get scraped. It calls for some experience to really leverage this link building strategy.

9. Trackback Links

Trackbacks happen when you link to a blog from your blog in a post. Your blog will actually alert the other blog that it has been linked to. Most trackbacks appear with an elipses (a …) before the trackback, and they appear in the comment section of a blog. Of course there is software for this too. It will spoof a track back from your site to hundreds of sites or even thousands of sites and you should get a layer of trackback links from it. They are usually nofollow links nowadays. Keep in mind that nofollow links still count in yahoo and other search engines. Even in google they count some. Google does follow nofollow links. Google just doesn’t pass any link juice, but it reads the anchor text!

10. Google Links

Getting a link from Google is cool right? If you go to google trends and see what the top searches are you can get a link from google! It’s not that hard. All you have to do is write about whatever is on the trends list. At google trends the top 100 keywords are listed. These keywords are what people are searching for RIGHT NOW. Google needs the info. For instance when Michael Jackson died it was all over google trends. You just copy the keyword from google trends, put it in your title and write a post about it. Make sure you use the keyword over and over again in the post.

Google also lists related searches for each keyword. You have to click on the keyword in the trends list and it will take you to an info page that will show you, among other things, the related searches to that keyword. Put those related search keywords in your tags.

Then bookmark the hell out of the post and you will get links from google trends. Not to mention tons of traffic. Mostly useless traffic but traffic none the less.

If you found this post useful do me a favor and link to it. I wanna see what happens…link bait style.

I want to talk about one very interesting link building tactic. It is a funneling tactic as I call it. This is where you funnel link juice from a site with very high page rank to a page you control. It can be just general link juice and not anchored link juice.

All do follow links pass page rank. But it is the words in your anchored links that you will rank for. So getting high page rank anchored links will help your site rank for those words or keywords. That’s anchored link juice. General link juice (yeah, I made these terms up:) is when you leave a non keyword anchor such as a name. You still funnel the pagerank juice but it just stays stored up in your blog. It doesn’t help you rank.

This link building tactics that I’m going to share with you is a technique which funnels general link juice.

First find a high page rank site that allows you to join up and have a profile. This profile page needs to allow you to leave a link in your “About Me” section. We are going to funnel link juice from the homepage of this big authority site to your humble little profile page. Then we are going to link the profile page to one of your white hat blogs. We are then going to find another authority site to join and repeat until your white hat blog is nice, fat and full of page rank.

So where are these high pr sites? These are the so called web2.0 sites. Sites that allow a community to exist and vote or comment on stories featured on the homepage. TV.com is one such place.

There are some things to look for. You have to make absolutely sure that somehow the homepage of this site links to your profile page! That is a must. Luckily most of these kind of sites have a link on the homepage to recent news stories. Then the news stories allow comments. The comments link to your profile. Everything has to be dofollow. There is an option in seoquake that will put a line through any link that is nofollow. Very handy.

The idea is that sometimes one of these news stories will have a very high pagerank, like a pr7. Just one link from a page like that will turn your profiel page into a pr5 or pr6. That’s what I’m talking about. You funnel the juice from the homepage! Then you funnel it to your white hat blog and finally to your money page.

This is a great link building tactic! Now for a tip as I always like to emphasize things that aren’t talked about on other blogs. You can immediately leverage this great link building tactic and have it work for you right away. Most people don’t realize that you don’t need to wait for a page rank update to leverage your linking efforts! The pagerank update is only an update on your tool bar. In reality google is constantly updating your pagerank. It just doesn’t show in the tool bar.

So what this means is you can create a profile, comment on some very high pr pages and almost immediately your money page will begin to rank. No need to wait to see if your profile page really is going to be a high pr page. If you get the links as I outlined about you’ll get the pagerank. I’ve done this over and over again and it always works.

You would be surprized how quickly you can build say 5 profile pages like this. That’s a lot of juice.

I’m going to give a brief link building tutorial in this post. This is not compreshensive but rather just a brief tutorial around blog commenting and funneling link juice. I want to focus on some of the things I don’t read about often on other blogs. Why repeat the same old stuff right? Well I guess I’ll have to do a little of that for those of you who may not have much experience with seo.

It’s all about getting anchored links. That’s the first thing you should learn in my opinion. Once you realize that you can consistently rank sites and pages by building links to them, you’ll want to really know more about it! But don’t take my word for it, do some research yourself. Analyze a couple hundred top ranking pages across a few dozen niches and you’ll see that the link profiles are always well built.

That is to say that the links are anchored correctly. You must have the keyword yuo want to rank for as the anchored text. How many anchored links do you need to rank for a particular keyword? To find out just look at the top ranking site and see how many of his links feature that particular keyword.

So you need to make sure your links are anchored. Now that we have that out of the way you have to wonder where the best places to get links are. What is a great link? That is a question worth answering.

A great link is an anchored link that comes from a high page rank page, is a dofollow link, comes from a page where the title, content and the overall site is very relevant to yours. This excellent link should come from within the body of the content and not on the sidebar or footer or anywhere else. Right in the content. That is a great link!

Where do you get that kind of link? That’s the question! One answer is you can buy it. People buy links all the time and it works like crazy, but it costs money. Go for it if you have the cash but don’t rely on this method of link building alone.

One way to get a link like this is to create your own network of high page rank sites. Start 20 blogs or so and get links to them all. Try to get some high pagerank links from other blogs. That’s easy actually. Just make sure your 20 ‘network’ blogs are totally real and not spammy. Put real content on them and link to them only with your name. Bloggers are much more likely to approve one of your comments if you only leave your name instead of a keyword.

See the difference? If you try to weasel a high page rank anchored link from a blog he’s gonna think you’re a spammer and not approve your link. But if you leave your name and a good comment your link gets approved. This will not help your blog rank for anything (but your name) but it will send “JUICE” to that blog. The “JUICE” is the stuff pagerank is made of and consequently you’ll soon find yourself with a pr4 or pr5 blog.

All you need is a few pr6 and pr5 dofollow links and that’s it. It’s not too hard to find those especially if you just anchor your name and leave a great comment. The result of all this is at the end of the day you’ll have a network of high pr white hat sites at your disposal. Very valuable indeed!

You should understand that a link from a pr5 blog where the link is in the body of the content, is much better than a comment link from the same pr5 blog. It’s much more powerful. I would even say that a pr3 link from a relevant site with relevant content is better than a pr5 comment link.

Think about ways to funnel juice. That’s what it really is. Finding ways of funneling page rank juice to a site you control. I make this point because most peole will go on a blog comment hunt, looking for high pr pages to comment on, and try to leave anchored links. It is a waste of juice because your links will get deleted. Try leaving “Buy Cheap Ankle Boots” as your name when you try to get a comment on a pr6 page!

Yet that’s what most people do. Instead you should just accept that you wont be able to directly link that site to your money page. Link it instead to your white hat farm blog. Then later you can link out to your money page from that blog with a much better link because it will come from the body of the content. See? Good.

The term link popularity building has always struck me as incorrect. Popularity just sounds kind of redundant to me. Amassing links is building your link popularity? I dunno, I just don’t like it.

In fact I think that it’s usually someone who is new to seo that calls seo link popularity building. I just get that feeling. I never hear experienced seo’s talk about link building popularity. We talk about link building and different techniques but the word popularity never comes up even as a throw away term.

There for I’m going to guess that if you are reading this post because you wanted to know something about link popularity building, that you are probably a beginner seo. So what should a beginner seo learn about link building then? How about where to get links.

There’s lots of places to leave your links! For starters try article marketing. You just write an article which will have your links in the resource box, and submit it to 100 directories or so. Google wont count every link because some article directories just shuffle your article to some deep page that will never get crawled or cached. But you will get links this way. Consider it a layer.

Then get another layer of links from directories. There are thousands of directories that will let you submit a link for free and there ya go! Free one way backlinks. It obviously helps if you have a list of article directories and directories as it will cut down on time. Even better is to have software that automates all or most of it.

Then work on your link popularity building by commenting on blogs and leaving your link. Try to leave anchored links all the time. The challenge with this method of link building is that bloggers are fussy about it. They will often delete your links if you leave an anchored link. They may even spam your link with askiment. Since everyone uses askimet to fight comment spam then once askimet thinks your url is spam, your comments will automatically start going straight to the spam folder.

Bookmarking sites will provide you with another layer of links. Again, there are just tons of these places out there. The trick is to have a big list that you can just refer to over and over. Either that or get some bookmarking software to do it for you.

Those four layers of links should give you enough link popularity to rank for some longtail keywords.

Reciprocal link building is the same as trading links. You get to put your link on my site and I get to put my link on your site. It’s a link exchange. That’s different than three way linking where of couse three sites are involved. So does reciprocal linking work? Yes it works but not as good as it once did say 5 years ago. Reciprocal linking was of course being abused in order to acheive high rankings.

Google got wise to it and devalued reciprocal linking. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work at all. It still works a little and every little bit helps. I get a big kick out of the so called “link building experts” who claim on their blogs, to have a great link building tip for you. They then go on to tell you exactly what the best way to beg for links is. Put this in your email and don’t sound like this or like that, ask for the link but ask a certain way etc… what a bunch of bologna! I see a lot of people talking in the forums about how to build reciprocal links. Pfft…

Sad thing is that these so called link building experts charge obscene sums of money for this damn near useless information about how to get reciprocal links. I’m not going to name names but just search google for link building expert or link building strategies and you’ll see what I mean:)

Proponents of reciprocal link building say that reciprocal links and targeted traffic go together. Well, that might be true sometimes but search engine traffic is a lot more targeted that traffic from reciprocal links. That’s usually just people browsing and clicking from one site to the next, without having any sense of urgency or need. See the difference? It’s not all about link popularity which is another term that is used somewhat carelessly in my opinion. Reciprocal link building for the sake of link popularity alone doesn’t make sense. Link popularity just tells you how many links you have and does not speak to the quality of your inbound links.

Let me pose a situation to you: it’s getting to be near Halloween and suddenly there is this new Halloween costume that is going to be all the rage this year. It’s been fashioned after some new celebrity or whatever. Ok, that’s the situation. Now here’ s my challeng: quickly cash in on the new and unexpected trend.

Are you going to send 400 emails to 400 competitors and ask them for links? Just in time for Halloween? “Yeah, just put this one your homepage for me Hannah Montana Halloween Costume For Sale…” I don’t think so. What I’m trying to say is that not every site is a long term site that affords you the time to wait around forever to get responses to your link begging emails!

There are reciprocal link building service that offer to do the work for you but I wouldn’t recommend it. No need to pay for that. Reciprocal link building and directory submissions? I never use a directory that requires a reciprocal link for the reasons stated in this post. It’s not worth it to me.

I give reciprocal link building only one thumbs up. Maybe even just half a thumb given that the time you take to go on a reciprocal link building campaign could be used to definitely get other links, even if they are crappy links just like reciprocal links. Yet reciprocal link building is another source of inbound links.

Why build links for seo? The fact of the matter is that seo link building is necessary if you want to rank competitively. Yes it’s the difficult and tedious job of building anchored links to your blog, pages and sites that will be the critical factor in getting that site ranked.

On page factors such as meta tags, alt tags, keyword placement, tags and so forth are also factors that need to be considered. What one must understand though is that the link building is about 90 percent of it. The link building is the critical component of an seo campaign and not the simple on page stuff. In fact you can rank a blank page with enough links!

So now that we’ve established the importance of a good seo link building campaign I will talk about where we can get links, what kind of links and the most efficient way to harvest those links.

I will start with answering what kind of links one should get. It helps if we look through googles eyes. How can we do that? Easy, just look at the sites google is already ranking and see how their links look. Do these ranking sites have lots of links from directories? If so then it might be a good idea for you to get lots of directory links.

Do the top ranking sites in this imaginary niche have lots of links from article directories? Then you should. But one thing that is common to all niches and all seo link building campaigns is anchored links. That’s the most important thing to remember. If you want to rank for the keyword “butter” then your anchored links should say, “butter” - it’s that simple.

Seo link building is not rocket science but the challenges involved do make themselves apparent after a short time. You’ll find yourself running out of places to get links. That’s when you have to think out of the box and get a little creative. I hope to delve into some of those interesting and unconventional approaches to getting links in a future post.

For now remember that if you go on an seo link building campaign you need to get anchored links. Secondly remember that you should look at where your competition is getting their links and build a similar profile for your own site.
