Reciprocal Link Building
Reciprocal link building is the same as trading links. You get to put your link on my site and I get to put my link on your site. It’s a link exchange. That’s different than three way linking where of couse three sites are involved. So does reciprocal linking work? Yes it works but not as good as it once did say 5 years ago. Reciprocal linking was of course being abused in order to acheive high rankings.
Google got wise to it and devalued reciprocal linking. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work at all. It still works a little and every little bit helps. I get a big kick out of the so called “link building experts” who claim on their blogs, to have a great link building tip for you. They then go on to tell you exactly what the best way to beg for links is. Put this in your email and don’t sound like this or like that, ask for the link but ask a certain way etc… what a bunch of bologna! I see a lot of people talking in the forums about how to build reciprocal links. Pfft…
Sad thing is that these so called link building experts charge obscene sums of money for this damn near useless information about how to get reciprocal links. I’m not going to name names but just search google for link building expert or link building strategies and you’ll see what I mean:)
Proponents of reciprocal link building say that reciprocal links and targeted traffic go together. Well, that might be true sometimes but search engine traffic is a lot more targeted that traffic from reciprocal links. That’s usually just people browsing and clicking from one site to the next, without having any sense of urgency or need. See the difference? It’s not all about link popularity which is another term that is used somewhat carelessly in my opinion. Reciprocal link building for the sake of link popularity alone doesn’t make sense. Link popularity just tells you how many links you have and does not speak to the quality of your inbound links.
Let me pose a situation to you: it’s getting to be near Halloween and suddenly there is this new Halloween costume that is going to be all the rage this year. It’s been fashioned after some new celebrity or whatever. Ok, that’s the situation. Now here’ s my challeng: quickly cash in on the new and unexpected trend.
Are you going to send 400 emails to 400 competitors and ask them for links? Just in time for Halloween? “Yeah, just put this one your homepage for me Hannah Montana Halloween Costume For Sale…” I don’t think so. What I’m trying to say is that not every site is a long term site that affords you the time to wait around forever to get responses to your link begging emails!
There are reciprocal link building service that offer to do the work for you but I wouldn’t recommend it. No need to pay for that. Reciprocal link building and directory submissions? I never use a directory that requires a reciprocal link for the reasons stated in this post. It’s not worth it to me.
I give reciprocal link building only one thumbs up. Maybe even just half a thumb given that the time you take to go on a reciprocal link building campaign could be used to definitely get other links, even if they are crappy links just like reciprocal links. Yet reciprocal link building is another source of inbound links.
